Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse so that she could have the opportunity to study art literature or theater. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. Similar to DuVernay's mom, she was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. In 1990, she was a graduate of the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay developed an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage inside the house of a member of jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity in a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. From this position she started her own public relations company named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
