Mary McDonnell
Mary McDonnell is an actress who has
been nominated for two Oscars(r). She is popular for her portrayals as
characters from both contemporary and period screen roles. Mary Eileen
McDonnell was the daughter of John McDonnell (a computer consultant) and Eileen
(Mundy) is a Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania native. Her birthplace was Ithaca, New
York and graduated from Fredonia State University of New York. Later, she
attended the drama school and was accepted to the Long Wharf Theatre Company in
East Coast. Her breakthrough film role was in Dances with Wolves (1990) by
Kevin Costner. She played the part of "Stands with a Fist" who was a
Sioux Indian raised white woman. The actress received her first Academy Award
nomination for the part. McDonnell was a part of the Lawrence Kasdan films
Grand Canyon (1991), and Mumford (1999) opposite such veteran performers as
Robert Redford as well as Sidney Poitier. She also starred in Roland Emmerich’s
Independence Day (1996), featuring Will Smith. Margin Call (2011) the film,
which was against Kevin Spacey, earned McDonnell the Robert Altman award at the
2012 Independent Spirit Awards. McDonnell played a prominent role on the Syfy
Network's award-winning series Battlestar Galactica (2004), where she was
recognized for her performance as President Laura Roslin. Her frequent guest
appearance as a host on the television series ER (1994) was rewarded with an
Emmy nomination. The hit TNT drama series Major Crimes (2012) features her as
Captain Sharon Raydor. This is the sequel to The Closer (2005) in which
McDonnell developed the role. She was nominated for an Emmy(r) from Primetime.
Emmy(r). McDonnell was awarded a Best Actress Academy Award(r) nomination and a
Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of an actor with paraplegia on soap
opera in John Sayles's critically-acclaimed film, Passion Fish (1992).
